"High Noon" is a landmark western classic. It introduced cinemagoers to Lee Van Cleef (the first face you see on the screen in close-up) and revitalised the career of legendary Hollywood superstar Gary Cooper. In this suspenseful western Cooper plays small-town sheriff Marshall Will Kane, a man with integrity and high standards, who on his wedding day discovers that gunslinger Frank Miller and his cronies are on their way to town to settle an old score. Cooper's wedding day was to be his retirement day. Will Cooper ride off into the sunset with his new bride or will he stay in town and settle the score? The answer is obvious but this gripping psychological western, that was shot in real-time, had audiences in the 1950's on the edge of their seats right to the very end. "High Noon" was a critical and financial success. It went on to win four Academy Awards including Best Actor (Gary Cooper), Best Editing, Best Music and Best Song (Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin'). "High Noon" is Gary Cooper's finest hour, he gives one of his best on-screen performances, Grace Kelly and Lloyd Bridges are solid in support and if you look fast you are sure to spot western great Jack Elam in an uncredited role as a drunk. "High Noon" was so popular that it was inevitable that there would be sequels or remakes. In 1980 a made for TV sequel titled "High Noon Part II: The Return Of Will Kane" was released starring "The Six Million Dollar Man" Lee Majors and in 2000 "High Noon" was remade, starring Tom Skeritt as Marshall Will Kane. The original "High Noon" has been known to pop up on television occasionally in computerised colour, but as far as westerns go, they don't get much than this, even in glorious black and white.
