"Tarzan In Manhattan" Tony's Comments:
Former model Joe Lara was chosen from thousands of young hopefuls to star in "Tarzan In Manhattan", an updated version of the Tarzan fish-out-of-water story. When Johnny Weissmuller journeyed to New York in the 1940's it was to search for "Boy" who had been kidnapped by animal poachers. In "Tarzan In Manhattan" the jungle man travels to New York to search for his faithful companion Cheetah. The villains, led by Jan Michael Vincent (The World's Greatest Athlete), kidnap Cheetah with the intention of conducting illegal animal experiments. Along for the ride in this one is Kathy Crosby as Jane (playing a New York cabbie) and Hollywood legend Tony Curtis as her father. Aside from the usual action and adventure that we see in most Tarzan movies, this one has a strong comedic element, mainly due to Tony Curtis hamming it up. One thing is for sure Joe Lara certainly looked the part and had the physical attributes necessary for the character. "Tarzan In Manhattan" had all the makings of a TV pilot and the ending left viewers in anticipation of a Tarzan, private eye-type investigator series that unfortunately never eventuated. Joe Lara did however go on to star as Tarzan again almost 7 years later in the TV series "Tarzan: The Epic Adventures", this time round it was more serious than fun and the episodes resembled Indiana Jones style adventures. "Tarzan In Manhattan" is far from being the best Tarzan in the long running film series but if it's campy Tarzan entertainment you're looking for, this one won't let you down.
