Ben Stiller is back in business in the kind of “unlucky sap” romantic comedy role that he does best. For Along Came Polly, his director is John Hamburg, writer of two previous Stiller hits, Meet the Parents and Zoolander.

Reuben Feffer (Stiller) is a guy who avoids risks. So how come, despite all his plans, his bride, Lisa (Debra Messing) dumps him on their honeymoon when a hunky scuba diving instructor (Hank Azaria) muscles in on the scene?

The humiliating incident convinces the shell-shocked Reuben that from now on he’ll play it safer than ever. But that’s when childhood friend, Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston) comes along. Attracted to Polly, whose unplanned lifestyle is in complete contrast to his own sedate, risk-avoiding existence, Reuben does things he would once never consider - like eating spicy food! What Reuben - who suffers irritable bowel syndrome - endures in the name of romance when Polly drags him along to her favourite Moroccan restaurant turns into a stomach churning sequence of the most vivid kind - and a rather disastrous end to the date. Surprisingly, though, Polly phones him again and it’s not long before Reuben is taking salsa lessons to impress her on the dance floor of her favourite nightspot. Another first.

Polly is a girl who won’t commit to anything, a free spirit who does whatever makes her feel good, while Reuben weighs the consequences of everything - but he’s convinced she’s the girl for him. And then the estranged Lisa comes back into his life and wants him to take her back.

Giving Reuben mostly bad advice is best friend, Sandy (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an actor who hangs onto his one moment of dubious glory when he was a child star in a single movie. Sandy is now rehearsing the role of Judas in an amateur production of Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he arrogantly informs the rest of the cast that he also wants to play the role of Jesus! Watch out, too, for Alec Baldwin in a funny turn as Reuben’s boss, Stan and, Aussie actor, Bryan Brown as the sky-diving, bungee jumping Leland Van Lew (!) a thrill seeker who is also seeking life insurance!
