Based on a hit 1996 Japanese film, this romantic comedy allows us to see Richard Gere again show off the dance skills he surprised us with in Chicago.
Gere plays John Clark, a guy who enjoys what would seem like a pretty good life in his job and in his loving wife, Beverly (Susan Sarandon) and family. In fact, lifes a little stale for John and something seems to be needed to brighten the everyday routine of toing and froing from work. Things pick up when he spies a beautiful face staring through the window of a dance studio. Here name is Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) and shes a dance teacher.
One night, in a reckless moment, John decides to jump off the train and go to the dance studio where he signs up just so he can meet the woman who has entranced him. Not everything goes as planned. Its not Paulina who will be Johns instructor, but the more mature Miss Mitzi (Anita Gillett). His movements on the dance floor are far from smooth and nor is his first meeting with Paulina who makes it clear that the only reason he should have signed up is, well, strictly ballroom - and not for any ideas of romance.
Then something unusual happens. As John finds his dancing feet, his thoughts are less and less on Paulina and more and more on the sheer exhilaration of dancing in which he continues to improve - to the point where he trains for a major Chicago competition. Through Johns enthusiasm, Paulinas own love of dance returns and their friendship grows.
Because John has kept his newfound fascination for dance from his family and friends, Beverly begins to worry about his increasing absence from home and she suspects an affair. When she hires a private detective to investigate, Johns secret may be about to be revealed.
