Tim Burton's re-creation of the comic book superhero "Batman" is darker, grittier, & more sinister than ever before, focusing more on the villain, in this case "The Joker", played over-the-top by Jack Nicholson. The film takes a serious look at the caped crusader & avoids the campy humor that made the Adam West series popular. "Batman" was made on a big budget featuring elaborate sets & high profile actors. "Batman" was the smash hit of 1989 & three sequels followed "Batman Returns" (1992), "Batman Forever" (1995), and "Batman & Robin" (1997). Michael Keaton starred in the first two, Val Kilmer in the third & George Clooney put on the cape for the fourth. "Batman" is a feast for the eyes, winning the Oscar for Best Art Direction & Set Decoration; it is a good adaptation of the comic book & should please "Batman" fans.
