"The Blob" is a well remembered & campy 1950's Sci-Fi film, thanks to the debut of a young Steve McQueen, some eye popping special effects & a catchy title track composed by Burt Bacharach. This low-budget, B-grade Sci-Fi film was extremely popular with the drive-in circuit in the late 1950's. Made on a budget of $240,000 the film went on to gross more than $4 million at the US box office. Steve's salary was reportedly $3,000. The plot sees McQueen & other teenagers do battle with an alien jelly-like creature that has landed in their small town. The mysterious Blob causes havoc as it continues to grow in size. "The Blob" has gone on to become a cult classic. A sequel, "Beware of The Blob" was released in 1972 & the original Blob was even remade in 1988. Fans of McQueen & 50's Sci-Fi adventure flicks will enjoy this film.
"The Blob" (1958) DVD Synopsis:
A shapeless lifeform from a fallen meteor is feeding off the unsuspecting inhabitants of a small town. It is up to a teenage couple to warn their neighbors of the danger from outer space. One of the great cult classics, "The Blob" melds '50s schlock sci-fi and teen delinquency pics even as it transcends these genres with strong performances and knockout special effects. Made outside Hollywood by a maverick film distributor, a crew experienced in religious and educational shorts, and a collection of theatrical talent from Philadelphia and New York, "The Blob" helped launch the careers of superstud Steve McQueen and future "Andy Griffith Show" girlfriend Aneta Corsault.
