TONY'S COMMENTS :
"The Magnificent Seven" is one of the greatest & most famous Hollywood Westerns ever-made. When you hear the magnificent Elmer Bernstein music score in the opening credit sequence, you know that you are in for a real treat. Based on Akira Kurosawa's Japanese classic "The Seven Samurai", "The Magnificent Seven" plays its cards right, from start to finish & Sturges directs brilliantly. The film has an excellent ensemble cast that is yet to be equaled in a western. Names like Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Horst Buchholz, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn & James Coburn all went on to become A-list stars.
"The Magnificent Seven" succeeds with its storytelling & features strong characterisations. You really begin to feel for these men, each one an individual & just as compelling as one another. The plot sees the seven come together for a common cause. They take on the task of helping a poor Mexican village from being tormented by an army of bandits led by the infamous Calvera, played menacingly by veteran actor Eli Wallach. Each man accepts the mission for his own reason, but all live by the same code of honor. On repeated viewing the characters have a tendency to grow on you. The script is also wonderful with many memorable lines including the classic statement by Steve McQueen, "We deal in lead, my friend".
"The Magnificent Seven's" powerful Elmer Bernstein soundtrack was nominated for Best Music Score at the Academy Awards, but surprisingly it did not win. The catchy theme tune continues to live on, it was featured in Marlboro cigarette commercials for many years & today it is still played by marching bands around the world. It is possibly one of the greatest soundtracks of the 20th century.
"The Magnificent Seven" was so popular that 3 sequels followed, with Brynner only appearing in the first sequel "Return of The Seven" (1966). The other two sequels "Guns of The Magnificent Seven" (1969) & "The Magnificent Seven Ride!" (1972) starred George Kennedy & Lee Van Cleef respectively. "The Magnificent Seven" returned in the late 90's in the form of a hugely popular television series. If you are a fan of western movies & you haven't seen "The Magnificent Seven", you are really missing out on something special. It is a landmark film in its genre & should not be missed.
They were seven - And they fought like seven hundred!
