If you grew up in the 1980's chances are pretty high that you got to see the werewolf comedy "Teen Wolf" on the big screen. Although made before "Back To The Future", this campy low budget teen film starring Michael J. Fox of "Family Ties" fame was held back and given a major release in August 1985, just after the massive box office success of "Back To The Future". While "Back To The Future" was packing houses and becoming the number 1 film across America, "Teen Wolf" opened and capitalised on its success and everybody's enthusiasm for Fox. With "Back To The Future" at number 1 & "Teen Wolf" at number 2, a new teen star had been born. "Teen Wolf" is a campy tale of a teen basketball player who discovers that he is a descendent of a family of werewolves. This premise was originally used in the 1957 Michael Landon classic "I Was A Teenage Werewolf", but this time round it is given a 1980's spin with more empathises on comedy and romance rather than horror. With the big-time success of "Teen Wolf" it was inevitable that a sequel would follow. 2 years later "Teen Wolf Too" was released in theatres with a new werewolf in the role. Jason Bateman the popular star of the TV series "Valerie's Family" & later the spin-off series "The Hogan Family", replaced Michael J. Fox in this sequel. Bateman plays the cousin of the Michael J. Fox character of the original film. "Teen Wolf Too", although not as good as the original, was nevertheless a success. The sequel sadly lacks the presence of Michael J. Fox, who at the time of its release was starring in the much bigger box office smash "The Secret Of My Success". Both "Teen Wolf" & "Teen Wolf Too" are essential viewing for 1980's fans. If you are looking for campy light-hearted entertainment on a Saturday night then they don't come much better than this double-bill.
