Swashbucklers & Pirates

High seas excitement might be the next new wave in big screen entertainment this year. December will see the arrival of Russell Crowe in Master and Commander based on one of the naval adventures by Patrick O’Brian, but first there’s this swashbuckler inspired by the Disney theme park ride that opened back in 1967 and remains popular today.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl combines all the best elements of seafaring films with a touch of the supernatural.

Heading the cast is Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish charmer who sails the seas for adventure on his ship, the Black Pearl. Life changes for Jack when his arch-enemy, Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) steals his ship. Barbosa then attacks the town of Port Royal where he kidnaps Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the Governor (Jonathan Pryce).

Joining Jack in a daring mission to rescue Elizabeth - and regain his ship - is Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth’s childhood friend who has always been smitten by her but who is aware of the class differences between them. The two men and Jack’s motley crew set out on the HMS Interceptor, the fastest ship in the British fleet and are pursued by the dashing and ambitious Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport). Norrington, who has sworn to rid the seas of its pirates, is also the man to whom Elizabeth is betrothed

But Barbossa and his men are not ordinary pirates. They have been cursed to live forever and on moonlit nights they transform into hideous living skeletons. Only the return of plundered treasure can break the curse.
