During the 1870s, Civil War veteran, Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is hired by the Japanese Emperor to train his troops in the art of modern warfare. Part of his assignment is to help wipe out The Samurai.

When Algren is captured by this ancient warrior class, he must reconsider which side he supports and finds himself in the midst of a struggle between two eras.
